The MPCU a development of the "Max Planck-Institut für biophysikalische Chemie" at Göttingen (Germany) as instrumental component of the method of Extracellular Patch Clamp Technic, first introduced by Prof. E. Neher and B. Sakmann..
The MPCU serves a number of different purposes with regard to handling the ringer bath during electro-physiological recording such as bath perfusion and extra cellular application of test substances.
The MPCU is basically two instruments in one:
- The FLUID LEVEL CONTROLLER to maintain constant levels in tissue culture chambers or other experimental bathes.
- The AIR PRESSURE CONTROLLER for establishing gigaseals and for applying drugs and other agents by a pipette.
